AVON GARDENS TRUST NEEDS YOU
Interested in historic gardens? Would you like to get more involved and have a few hours a month to spare? We have many valuable and interesting activities to further the aims of Avon Gardens Trust. These can be short or long-term depending on your specific interest and how much time you have to spare and could lead to a greater involvement in the Trust.
PLANNING SUB-COMMITTEE
A vital part of our work is to oversee planning applications in each of our four local authorities where they are either listed parks & Gardens or they impinge on historic landscapes. We have a statutory right to provide opinions and raise appropriate objections.
We are currently looking for members to join the sub-committee to scrutinise applications and, where necessary, to liaise with Planning Officers. This could well involve visiting sites and carrying out research.
HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE DATABASE
We are in the process of updating our Avon Parks and Gardens database, which involve checking the facts, finding new images and carrying out additional research where needed, as well as researching new gardens to add to the database. This might involve visiting gardens, taking photographs, talking to gardeners and landscape architects, garden archaeologists and historians.
WRITING SHORT ARTICLES
Whilst we are always interested in Academic Research Papers for our biennial Journal, the Covid lockdowns have revealed considerable member interest in shorter, relevant articles in our monthly email newsletter.
We need a steady flow of short, stimulating articles on any Garden related subject – places you have visited, books you have read, local garden history, Friends and Community groups, or events that are about to happen. These articles need to be about 100-300 words with no more than one photograph, if appropriate.
There are more details on the website including relevant Trust contacts to discuss your interest with further. No immediate long-term commitment is needed – if it sounds interesting, give it a try. Any car mileage or stationery costs accrued will be re-paid.
