A Private Visit to Iford Manor Garden

Date/Time

Tuesday, 13 July 2021 at 11:00 am - 1:30 pm

Iford Manor Garden,  Iford Hill Road, Bradford-On-Avon. BA15 2BA

The garden tour of this Grade I listed garden, on a day closed to the public, will be led by the owner William Cartwright-Hignett. We will learn of its design, history, planting and architecture as well as the recent historical restoration work being undertaken by Head Gardener Troy Scott Smith.

Set in a valley at the end of the Cotswolds range, Iford Manor Garden has a rich history dating back to the Domesday Book and features Harold Peto’s Grade* II listed Cloisters with magnificent vistas to the hillside and orchards. Much work has been undertaken by the owners these last few years to restore the gardens to their former glory. The recently closed gardens [due to Covid 19] have allowed William and Troy to clear many overgrown trees, shrubs and plants to help restore back to Peto’s original proportions, and the whole garden has benefited from this approach.

The cloisters were gradually being undermined by a land slip, but recently a magnificent restoration has enhanced its beauty within its surroundings. The finished project earned Iford Manor the Sotheby’s Restoration Award for 2020.

At a recent visit this Spring, we saw experts from The Japanese Garden Society hand pruning the various flowering cherries, almonds and shrubs in the oriental garden designed by John Hignett. This task was undertaken with small scissors, a true labour of love, and the benefits are there for all to see.

A café and restaurant have been built alongside the gardens where we will be served with soup of the day, scone, and cheesecake with a beverage to complete our private tour.
